Chefchaouen or Chaouen, where it is often called by the Moroccans, is a well-known tourist destination because of its proximity to Tangier and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The name refers to the shape of the mountain peak above the city,There are around 200 hotels for the numerous European tourists. A unique feature of Chefchaouen is that the houses are kept in blue.

Chefchaouen is also a well-known shopping destination that offers many handcrafted products that are otherwise not found in Morocco, such as: For example: woolen clothing and woven blankets. The goat cheese that is produced there is also very popular with tourists.

There are many different mosques in this city. Next to the mosque at Uta Hammam Square in the medina is the Moulay Abdeslam Ben Mchich Alami mosque, which was dedicated to the patron of the northern Moroccan region of Jebalah. Its crypt is about an hour’s drive from Chefchaouen on the old Larache street. There you can also visit a ruin of a mosque built by the Spaniards.
